Assignment
During the Heritage Days, historic buildings across the Netherlands open their doors, allowing visitors to explore their rich histories. Since 2022, the Binnenhof has been closed for extensive renovations. However, on a few special days each year, the iconic complex is opened to the public. For the second consecutive year, Obsession was entrusted by the Government Property Agency to help organise this event, making the Binnenhof accessible during Open Monument Day.
Result
On Saturday, 14th September, the Binnenhof welcomed 2,800 visitors. In close collaboration with the Government Property Agency, we developed a registration system allowing guests to book a specific time slot. The demand was overwhelming, and all available slots were fully booked within a few days. Upon arrival, visitors followed a carefully designed route, guiding them through the impressive Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights), the vaulted undercroft, and the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives). Along the way, experts including staff, contractors, and architects shared fascinating insights into the building’s history and the largest renovation project in the Netherlands. Architects gave talks in specific rooms about the new designs and restoration efforts. Contractors hosted an information market, explaining the intricacies of the renovation work, while actors dressed as historical figures like Jacoba van Beieren and Johan van Oldenbarnevelt roamed the area, sharing stories about life in centuries past. Visitors also had the chance to play a VR game and capture their experience at a photobooth. For younger visitors, a puzzle quest led them through the Binnenhof, with an ice cream reward from a local parlour. Additionally, an accessible route was provided for visitors with physical disabilities, ensuring everyone could enjoy the event.
Visitors left the Binnenhof inspired and impressed by its historical significance, the scale of the renovation work, and the immersive experience of the day. In total, 2,800 guests enjoyed a glimpse behind the scenes of this monumental restoration.
