Assignment
The renovation of the Binnenhof is one of the largest construction projects in the Netherlands. Precisely because the heart of our democracy is literally being dug up, the need arose to make this process visible and tangible for everyone. Not only to provide transparency, but also to create support. In addition, there was a clear wish to inspire young people about a future in the construction and infrastructure sector. By actively involving them in the event, a seed could be playfully planted for the professionals of tomorrow. And finally, there was a first: for the very first time, the Ministry of General Affairs, including the iconic Trêveszaal, was opened to the public. This gave the event an extra layer of meaning, by literally opening doors that normally remain closed.
Result
In total, 11,000 people visited the Binnenhof during the Education Day and Day of Construction. The route guided them past scaffolding, restored façades, archaeological finds, and the Senate and House of Representatives. For many visitors, the Trêveszaal was the highlight: a place normally only seen on the eight o’clock news, but now accessible to everyone. The youngest visitors got actively involved. They hammered birdhouses in the shape of the Ridderzaal, built small walls, recreated the Prime Minister’s office with blocks, and could even operate mini diggers on the Hofplaats. In a low-threshold way, they were introduced to the world of construction. Craftsmen, architects, and employees of the Government Real Estate Agency explained on site about the work and the history of the Binnenhof. Their stories not only conveyed knowledge, but also gave a face to the work behind the scenes. The power of co-creation was made tangible. The Day of Construction proved that even a technical project can be turned into a meaningful live experience. An experience that opens doors (literally and figuratively) and shows that building is not only about bricks, but about people. About trust and the future.
